What is the difference between comics and manga?

Re: What is the difference between comics and manga?

Well. Manga is the japanese word for comics so here (Canada, Us, etc) comics from Japan are known as such, though lately they've begun to encompass a wider amount of differences. Manga is generally a comic of japanese style-drawn characters and so on. So even if the author is not japanese, if they're style is japanese like and in the same format then it's usually grouped in with the term manga. |

Re: What is the difference between comics and manga?

i think the difference is in the story itself .. manga has much deeper story than what we see in anime . and without manga there is no anime .. because anime is based on manga. and another thing the faces of the caracters are much wonderful in the manga. and don`t forget the difference in the price and by the way manga is much Popular in japan than anime. |

I know Comics: funnier, and super heroes, and stupid, colorful too. Manga: Black and white, love, romance, death, all the serious emotions, perverted sometimes, and vigilantes, and less longer series and more fun to read. |

Comics are dull and doesn't have that much plot and soul unlike Manga. Manga has all of the stories you can find! Manga is also fun to read and affects our everyday lives! Much of the stories in the comics are like the old good vs evil story...Manga on the other hand have all the genres you can find like comedy, romance, drama, mystery, ecchi and more interesting... I think that manga is deeper, and is for a ....wider audience, let's say. genres that dont exist within the world of comics can be found in manga. Manga has better art, and is usually more detailed, and mostly printed in black and white. |

There is no difference. Everybody copies off each other leading to a uniformed artform. |

although comics are action-oriented, it doesn't mean that they can have excellent character development. it may not have romance, but it can still have some comedy depending on the writer. and second, I think that manga is deeper, and is for a ....wider audience, let's say. genres that dont exist within the world of comics can be found in manga. Manga has better art, and is usually more detailed, and mostly printed in black and white. you must be joking, right? http://godin.julien.neuf.fr/Couvertures/Bananafish02_13012003.jpg http://home.columbus.rr.com/darynbrian/Ultimate%20Spider-Man%20Learning%20Curve%20big.jpg and thirdly, Comics are dull and doesn't have that much plot and soul unlike Manga. Manga has all of the stories you can find! Manga is also fun to read and affects our everyday lives! Much of the stories in the comics are like the old good vs evil story...Manga on the other hand have all the genres you can find like comedy, romance, drama, mystery, ecchi and more interesting... unfortunately most manga dealing with comedy aren't funny. most romances are shallow. haven't read any drama or mystery. most ecchi are repetitive, with the "oh noes, i fell in your breasts, this hinders my relationship with you, but ultimately, i will capture your heart." |

one immediate distinction is that comic is read left to right whereas the vice versa applies in manga. Manga covers open left to right but comic is the other way around. |
Re: What is the difference between comics and manga?

I think, comics are only for kids. In western contries, comics are made for kids (...I think...sorry if I'm wrong), with some exceptions for comic strips such as Dilbert, Garth and Garfield. Manga is made for a variety of audience, from gradeschool students to adults. For each targeted audience, there is a common style. Notice the difference between Naruto and Battle Angel Alita? For each intended audience, there are also different weekly or monthly manga magazine. For boys there are weekly shonen jumps, and for adult...sorry, I forget the names. Also, I think comics and mangas represent two different culture. Comics represent western culture. Mangas represent Japanese culture. |

Technicly there is no differnce between Comics and Manga. The Japanese term Manga is used for all forms of comic books. But getting into what most people catagorize comics into we have 4 major types in most retail outlets. We have your basic North American comics and as much as some people try to say that North American comics are for kids read some of the DC universe right now and that beleif can be thrown right out. We have European comics the most well known being Tin-Tin, Astrix and The Smurfs, Then we have Korean Comics (Magwa? Not sure on the spelling of the term) Finally we have Japanese Manga. The thing we have to keep in mind is that most of these titles are made with the readers in their home countries in mind and not forgeiners. Basicly Manga are Japanese comics made for Japanese readers. Comic is a world wide accepted term for the motionless pictured entertaonment artform. |

well put, soatome. i don't think i could've worded it better. whenever someone makes the argument that "comics/cartoons are for kids" or "manga/anime is japanese, and comics/cartoons are western", i like to ask, "is that what the japanese say?" since manga and anime are japanese terms (albeit derived from other languages), who knows the definitions better than the japanese? |
