Does anyone know any Japanese stories about Japanese mythology? I'm curious here, because in Chinese there's of course Sung Wu Kong (Monkey King) and other stories that have connections into it. How is it with Japanese mythology? |

Perhaps the Snow Princess/Woman? The Fairy, or Moon Princess whose coat was stolen by the farmer... I honestly can't remember the name of that one. Also, I could be mistaken..this may have a Chinese base, but isn't the four directional Gods apart of Japanese mythology? Are you wanting actual stories, or just titles to research?

Oh I remember the Snow Princess/Woman, there were so many different versions but I got the old sad version... Actually, I was just thinking about knowing some different stories. Yeah, I guess you can say to research. |

If it's just for things to research, I would say look for information on kappa and oni....they may be more folktales than mythology though. I plan on getting some Japanese History someday(including the mythology aspect), but I gotta pay off current student loans before I feel brave enough to ask for more money ^_^

Ok mythology....Well there is kappa...No not the yu gi oh card....It was a demon that lived in the swamps...and feed off of humans and animals...The source of its power was the lqiuid substance....Kapa's keep there word so...If you save or help one and they say they will do anything...thats good....Or just bow to it...it will do the same and keep bowing to dump all the lqiuid out. Then run like hell....Have you ever seen Yu Yu hakusho...Well Kuarama is a Kitsune (fox spirit) They are very tricky, and Yuki-Snow demon....Then there is Goku....Most people know that legend...Watch DB,DBZ,DBGT...The character Goku is named after the monkey.Oni- which is a ogre...They are ugly.....I have a book on demons so if you need any more info on mythology just ask.........

Wasn't the Pokemon Psyduck based of the kappa? I thought I read it somewhere of what some of the first 151 Pokemon were based off of. |
Re: Japanese mythology

animeallen mentioned Ayashi no Ceres, and that's exactly what I was thinking of when I mentioned fairies ^_^ Anyways, along with fairies, there's the Moon Princess/Bamboo princess. This may Chinese though...and sometimes I think it could be another version of the fairy and her coat. A farmer finds a glowing child in a bamboo plant and they raise her...somehow she gets back home to the moon...sound familiar to anyone...or is it just another fairy story? As for the Pokemon...aren't "pocket monters" themselves some kind of kiddie legend? I have too much in my head right now, so it's all jumbled up and everything mixing together!

Then there is the myth about the Sun Goddess Amaterasu and how she was lured out again out of her cave by the God Uzume who became her husband. The legend was mentioned in Ai Yori Aoshi when Aoi's guardian locked herself in and the little ferret lured her out, thus everyone called the ferret Uzume. |

But you know, there are a few Japanese tales that are actually borrowed from Chinese culture. The story about the Ox and the Weaver is one of them and the Japanese used the story for their holiday, I forgot what it was called but some girls would write wishes and hang them on a tree. Dont refer to DB, DBZ or DBGT for the story behind Son Goku. Toriyama might have based it on the original but it has nothing to do with the real story. The only anime that come closest is Gensoumaden Saiyuki but they told it with a twist. *laugh* I love the way Sanzo went from a sissy to a monk that broke ALL the rules, and that rather than Son Goku giving Hakkai and Gojo crap, Goku was a simple hungry monkey. But still, I like the original Goku better. I REALLY dont like it when people refer to Hakkai as Pigsy and Gojo as Sandy or Goku as Monkey. It sound so lame. Why couldnt they use their original names like Gensoumaden Saiyuki did. Gensoumaden Saiyuki was good but I still prefer Hong Kong TVB's version of Saiyuki. The Son Goku there is so COOL! |

anrinadia: you're talking about the Kaguya-hime story and it is Japanese. Seki: the story of Amaterasu-sama I heard about it too, but I don't remember her ever getting married though. That story is actually called "Ama no Iwate" and there's also a related story about her brother in "Yamata no Orochi" in which the brother, I think his name was called Susanowo, defeats an 8-headed snake and saves a princess. I actually have the children's books to those two stories but it's been a while I've seen them so my memory's a bit vague. There's also that Peach boy story, Momotarou. An old couple finds a giant peach from which a boy was born, and he sets out on a journey to defeat the oni. He meets animals on the way, a dog, a monkey, and a bird, and he gives them dango so they joins him to defeat the oni. They arrive on the island, and kills the oni. Something like that. |

Yeah there really are alot @.@ I know of a few..... |
Re: Japanese mythology

Nah, Amaterasu did marry Uzume. And the Japanese emperors claim their descent from this marriage. |
Re: Japanese mythology

First Ayashi no Ceres, Now Blue seed. There is an actual retelling of Susannah O(I apologize for spelling, I have no time to go check this morning) when Momiji is looking up the history about her home town to figure out what's going on. There was either a Newtype or Animerica artitcle that went back and listed all the retellings of the Sanzo party, and I believe they mentioned Hong Kong TVB's animation...I will try and look next time I go to the attic. There's an interesting twist on the girl that meets her lover once a year in Ranma 1/2(they are stars that come close together once a year). It was sooo cute...but I forgot all their names and the story name...but I think it could be the ox and weaver one. Yes, definitely don't use Dragon Ball for mythology...it's just been butchered too much. I too like the newest verion of Saiyuki...but I am a girl, so I am a little biased when it comes to lots of pretty boys with attitudes ^_~

Re: Japanese mythology

The Hong Kong TVB's version of Saiyuki was a live-action series though, not animated. The actor who plays Goku is so cool, giving Goku more hip. It's probably lame for the first time but it's better than its sequel or Saiyuki Live-action done by the Japanese, that one just sucks. Using a woman for Sanzo? That's just wrong, the JP live action ones resembles to Sanzo Party wannabes in Gensoumaden Saiyuki. |
Re: Japanese mythology
|
My bad, this one was a Hong Kong animation, and Sanzo was bald. It was older, but the animation seemed crisp and very colorful. It was aired as a tv show...I am guessing maybe evenings or "after school" like. Oh yeah, there's a Halmark special that's a Monkey King story too. Ummmm return to the West or something like that. Basically, a guy from current times has to "journey to the West" via Sanzo party style. The Goddess plays a larger role in this one, and gets way too involved...but considering her character was the only one being played by some one who could act....I can see why they showed a lot of her.

Yes they do. In the manga at least. But it's pretty much familiar characters and humor. Nothing really to much about the real story about Monkey King. |
