violence and games
Link | by Evard on 2005-08-16 21:24:36
this is an idea my brother came up with that people blame kids teens and other people for being violent after playing games like "grand theft auto"
and the way he looks at it is the people who tend to accept it more and faster are violent people to start becase this continues to desensitize (cant spell) them faster since it stimulates the part of them that likes and want violence

do you think this makes sense and is plausable.

(I will be updating this to use his own words latter or ill ask him to post it him self also this could be wrong on the second half)

Death is the gift a blade shall bring, death is the gift a blade shall sing why is it my life sucks so much I mean it really sucks

I think that the whole "My client committed a crime because he was influenced by Grand Theft Auto" or similar games is rediculous. He may have gotten a specific idea from the game that he would not have had otherwise, but beyond that, it is no more harmful than TV and movies these days...

Defense lawyers and psychotic and irresponsible people are always looking for a quick way out and to blame a video game is a quick fix, like pressing the "instant easy-blame" button during the court case...

Now, I will admit that I agree, people who commit crimes and blame it on games is likely because they did accept it easily, *because* they were likely already violent people and it stimulated them...

However, it seems as though blaming games has become a crutch in legal defenses.... Why don't we see the same being applied to TV, Movies, Books, etc.... Did people who watch movies or TV series' try to emulate the actions of these characters and their lifestyles??? Of course, people have been subconsciously doing that for years, but it's only because of an easily-targeted game like Grand Theft Auto, I think, that makes it so simple to blame the game for the actions of already violent, delusional people who can't separate a game from reality and would have had these problems and committed these crimes regardless of the game's "influence".

(Sorry I got on a rant there, the whole GTA-made-me-do-it controversy always gets me like that) :> I've played all the GTAs over the years, and you don't see me shooting cops & stealing cars :)

I've seen plenty of statistics that say that people who play violent video games are no more likely to commit crimes than those who don't. I got most of the info from an article in The New York Times. It was really interesting--it said that every time a new form of media comes along, it is rejected by the older generation and accepted by the younger generation, until the older generation dies out and the cycle starts over again. Examples it cited were--

vinyl records
radio
tv
rock music
comic books
the internet
waltz dances
etc.

Each of these was blamed for the ruin of "today's youth". There was even an ancient Greek philosopher who was cerain that the written word would bring about the end of society.
As for the Internet, the older generation has accepted it because the same corporate executives who decried it as a porn-filled pit of filth and decadence were required to integrate it into their businesses and use it for there work, or else fall behind their competitors. Once they were in on it they learned to love it.
BUT! They don't have to play video games the way they had to adopt the Internet, and therefore they won't come to accept them in the same way.

That's just the way it goes...
