I'd personally get Neon Genesis Evangelion. I haven't really seen X, but I heard it wasn't up to par with NGE. It's not my call on what you are going to purchase, but I'd go with Evangelion.
Don't make fun of it, don't destroy it, don't cheapen it.

X is an excellent series by CLAMP and if you're a fan of their previous work, then you won't be disappointed. EVA, however has always been a landmark and staple anime. However, if you're not into hard-thinking animes that dwell into the true nature of the human soul, then it's not for you. Check out the EVA movie "Death & Rebirth" as it can give you a brief summary of the entire series as well as the first half hour of the "End of Evangelion" movie. Side B of the disk also has a lot of info that can be used to help you understand that which seems to make no sense. Between the two, Evangelion gets my vote but X is still a great series in it's own right.
