DDR: not like real dancing?!?
Link | by nejigirl on 2005-08-29 10:44:43
i just started playing DDR {i'm on light} and the first thing i noticed was that it's not really like dancing!!! i danced for like ten years, and i think it's different. however, i do think that you need rhythm to effectively play the game... do you guys think that? i dunno...i sort of think it's more like a cardio workout or something like that... =_='.... it's still fun though!!!

nya........... hehe.

Yeah, I wouldn't know, but I don't really care either. It's not like I play so I can learn how to 'dance' or anything, although now I can't help but tap my fingers or move something to keep rhythm with any music I hear.

Exactly. I don't think it was meant to teach you how to dance anyway.

Most of the well known players like A-Team from Korea and Jason Ko look like good dancers when they play DDR, but they aren't even real dancers to begin with.

I guess you could learn to freestyle in DDR or make up step routines. It's just up to you what to do with the game whether or not you have a dancing background.

Hell, a lot of drummers can tell you that Drummania is nothing close to playing the real thing at all.

I personally think that dancing is more up to the song than the actual game. A good stepfile will kind of make you dance to it, but alot of them out there are kind of just stomping on arrows in rhythm. Also, alot of players don't follow the spins and such (I don't) so it's a little different. I'd imagine its hard to mimic dancing if you're always facing the same direction.

Agreed though, it's still alot of fun, which is why we all play it.

Heh, I know a guy that plays very well. He goes to light on doubles and actually dances to the beat. he's their two-stepping adn moonwalking and doing spins. It's fun to watch him. Freestyling also gets you to do some real dance moves, like getting down on your knees and other things.

It's like a rave of sorts. Ravers rarely spin.

well, i've only known for ddr for a while now, and I do like the game very much, its obvisously entertaining and easy to learn but sometimes hard to master depending if your good at moving your feet at the right arrow on the pad at all. What'll be cool if they made DDR: Anime where all the songs are actually the lagrest collection of anime theme songs from every show we can think of. I bet over 500 songs from all of our favorite anime shows will be there if they do that.

then again, its just stepping on the arrows on the dance pad, so i can somewhat agree with the fact that its not like dancing but its still fun

All I'm saying is, if you're really good at DDR you can make it like real dancing. You have to do it in light mode though, because you cannot really dance in heavy mode. Too many arrows and too much movement. In light mode you get a lot of breaks so you can improv. and you can move to the beat. It's better if you actually see it. You won't believe it until you watch someone that's really good at the game(just because you can beat Max 300 or AA it does not mean you're good). Sorry, I just get tired of people thinking they are the best thing to the world or god's gift to DDR. Lol, bad analogy, but you get what I mean. If you watch a good freestyler or go to a tournament you can see real dancing on that machine.

I first got into DDR because I saw a guy was able to freestyle on Maniac/Heavy or whatever they call it now. Try AM-3P on whatever mode they call it now and it's really easy to freestyle. Also, seen the Koshiru Boom Boom Dollar routine? It's on Maniac mode and it's one of the best DDR routines and one of the most emulated routines ever.

"What'll be cool if they made DDR: Anime where all the songs are actually the lagrest collection of anime theme songs from every show we can think of. I bet over 500 songs from all of our favorite anime shows will be there if they do that."

The cloest thing you'll get to that is that they put the Lupin the 3rd theme in 4th Mix. Anyway, I know the only bemani game that features anime songs is Pop 'N' Music Anime Lo series. I also know in Drummania and Guitar Freaks, it has the Ginga Tetsudou 999 theme song and some of L'Arc~En~Ciels songs used in animes as well as some of TM Revolution's.

Speaking of Drummania, I heard that it's nothing like playing the real drums at all according to my friends who play drums.

But if you really want to make it look like real dancing, just make your own routines with edit step mode at home and then bring your memory card to the arcade and show your original skills. I know a tournament back in 2000 sorta did something like that.

If you're going to quote me use my name. Second, use it in context also. If you read all the posts you would realize I'm talking about real dancing, not just freestyling. I am a freestyler and I love freestyling on Heavy. R3, Orion, Sexy Planet, Frozen Ray, Tsugaru(Apple Mix), and so on. Now for the people that did not read my posts from earlier.... To REALLY DANCE on the pad you SHOULD do LIGHT MODE, because you have more FREEDOM to move around. More FREEDOM=MORE DANCING. You can freestyle on every mode. To do REAL DANCE MOVES, it is EASIER to do it on LIGHT MODE. NOW THIS DOES NOT SAY YOU CAN ONLY DO IT ON LIGHT MODE! IT IS JUST REALLY REALLY HARD TO REALLY DANCE ON HEAVY MODE! Are we clear now?

The higher u are in DDR rank the more it looks like dancing. im in Standard so im partically dancing but beginner and light are like 1-2 step unless ur doing a high rank song in light like paranoia stuff like that.but i think heavy is the best because the person is going with the lyrics or the faster beat of the song which actual dancers do. This can go on forever its like dancing once ur past light ok?

this is my view on it:
Dancing: Pretty organized stuff for people with half minds
Dance Dance Danceing: Eye foot coordination.... a differant kind of dancing all in itself.

Music rules me, my best friend will rule you!

Dancing and DDR are hard to classify, don't you think? First off, the nature of dancing itself is pretty hard to classify. There are so many styles out there, one can argue that DDR can be called a style of dancing. For example, I pop and do liquiding (albeit not all that well), but when you're comparing it to, say, ballet, it's a glaring difference. Both are still considered dancing, though, no? Dancing requires some sort of skill set and practice to do (atleast for me).

So, I think that DDR should be called a dance. And, people who play, I bet you've noticed that everyone doesn't exactly dance the same way. Some are really in the groove and it's a treat to see them play, but some seem to stomp, even at the same level. I love to groove on the pads, and I will tell you, it is a lot of fun to see someone, especially on doubles, who make it look like an effortless art.

lol, with the guy banned it looks like I'm yelling at no one, or someone that didn't say anything to me. Yeah chomper, that is a good way of putting it. When people really get in the groove and follow the beat the like to move there feet in different ways.
