Dubs or Subs?
|
WHAT DO YOU PREFER WHEN YOU'RE WATCHING ANIME? DUBS OR SUBS? It's all good and all when we take anime series from Japan and feature them here and translate it, its a good source of entertainment. I remember the first anime I ever watched was Sailormoon and Dragonball and they were all dubbed. In my opinion since I was kid back then it was cool i didn't care -it was TV! But growing up and presented with anime series that only featured subs I actually found it much better and interesting to watch. And since the "english" translaters haven't yet messed up the whole plot -you actually see the whole of the story not the re-written version with cuts and in my opinion really crappy voice actors. LOL but i'm being biased with that i guess...(for all of you out there who are voice actors don't hurt me!!) There are actually 2 english speaking people that are really great voice actors in my opinion and they play the characters of Sango & Miroku in InuYaha and I think it might be Videl...(maybe not, kinda sounds like Kagome...anyways) & Goku in DragonBallZ. -Hehehe and they both live in the same city as me! Yea, Go Vancouver!...sorry I just had to put that there. So to answer my question from earlier SUBS ALL THE WAY! (and for the rest of you out there that actually understand it with the help of subtitles...:grumble:...just joking -dang i'm jealous now hahaha, but i'm getting there! *Konnichiwa?<--spelling?--->Sayonara*... Man i'm so sad...-_-) |

Subs are way better. Dub voice actors just suck. Why dont they just use there normal voices? I bet it would sound a lot better. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

Subs for sure By changing a character's voice is like changing their whole character And of course, when dubbed, a lot of scenes in the anime get cut out... They even sometimes change the whole character... Actually, it's not even the same anime that it initial was. Dubbing an anime is like stealing a person's soul. It's pure evil.

It isnt arguable. Subs are better. Some people like dubs, good for them. But currently there is too big of a gap between Japanese and American voice actors. Plus some stuff just doesnt translate into english well. |

I'd prefer that you people stop with your sub vs. dub arguing all the time and that further threads like these would be locked or deleted. |

So andrew doesn't like subs OR dubs...then does he watch anime muted...? Anyway, subs are way better. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

Subs are definitely better but I thought the dubbing for Dragonball Z was not bad. In the original JP version, Goku has a female voice, Piccolo's and Vegeta's didnt sound like the villain they were. But in the dub, Goku had more of a man's voice and not a girl squeal. I also like Piccolo's deep voice which I thought suited the character well. Vegeta's dubbed voice suited him quite well too. But overall, other than DBZ, every other anime is better with subs. Although I sometimes like to watch Gundam Wing in dubs as well, coz the actor who plays Duo Maxwell i think is the same as the onw who played Rattrap in Beast Wars. And everyone gotta like Rattrap. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

i think they are both good, although some dubs are bad it's just nice to hear them speak english. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

Ah, but bad subs are not nearly as annoying as bad dubs. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

I prefer subs, some dubs really sux, dub in games sux too!! |

"And of course, when dubbed, a lot of scenes in the anime get cut out... They even sometimes change the whole character... Actually, it's not even the same anime that it initial was. Dubbing an anime is like stealing a person's soul. It's pure evil." Way to overdramatize. Also, you're mistaken to assume that happens to all dubs or even most of them... |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

Aozame: even good dubs are generally not as good as the subs. And when dubs are bad, they can make a series unwatchable. When subs are bad (and I speak from personal experience) they are at worst somewhat annoying. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

definitely subs. most dubs suck, they cut scenes, they change the whole dialouges, and they're voices are friggin monotone! >_< stick to subs, at least you know that is how it really should be... |

of course its subs ! when they dub it the voices becomes all whiney n stuff and usually it sounds different from the real one so it just seems weird. And there's no "cool tone" (what the heck is that!! ^_^;)like those japanese seiyuus have .. |
Re: Dubs or Subs?

SUBS!!! I never watch DUBS. Regardless of what language they use or who the dub voice actors are, i ll never watch dubed anime cause most of the time dubs suck and its not original. I feel like watching someone else work orsomething or something like that(get what i mean). But regardless of what reason we should always get the originals. |

(...deep breath...) I'm actually a fan of dubbed anime. Please don't hate me or get the wrong idea. Since i speak English everyday and don't understand a word of Japanese, i may seem biased. I'm an Ausssie chick with a Viet background. You'd think i'd be more supportive of Asian languages. I understand that watching anime in its original form is true to the Jap culture. I don't know about the rest of you, but when i watch subs, i feel like half of my focus is taken away from the action. I'd like to focus 100% into the animation as well as understand what they are saying. Think of it as a story being made into many adaptations. Something like Romeo & Juliet has had many remakes. Whether it be in schools, theatre or cinematic, i'm sure many have supported them. The only possible explanation i can think of for crappy dubs can only be due to bad casting or that the voice director doesn't know how the character is supposed to be portrayed. You've gotta admit that in recent years the dubbing has gotten better. Voice actors a putting a lot of effort to bring anime to a wider audience, and i think that's commendable. It just feels comforting to listen and understand a language that surrounds your everyday life. I do believe that if you've watch subs most of the time, it can be hard to accept dubs, and vice versa. For me, my first anime experience was a dubbed one. So that's been my setting for many years. Because any anime thats shown here has already been dubbed. Watching dubs all the time, it felt really weird when i started watching fansubs of Naruto. I can get used to watching subs, but its just so distracting sometimes. Ok, what i'm about to say may offend some people. But please understand that this is my opinion only, not some ill will towards anyone, so i'd like to apologise first. I, however will not be offened if you give a harsh reply. (...deep breath...) Firt of all I think that some Jap voices are annoying. They sound too squeaky or high pitched. Ok, so yeah maybe its a 5 or 6 year old but anyone above 13 cannot sound like that. Secondly, why do shows with many females all sound the same? When you watch, you know that its a different person speaking and subconsciously think there's a difference in tone. But when i close my eyes, i can't tell who's speaking. I can only tell if its distinctively a low voice or something like that. Thirdly, why do some male characters have female voices? Putting aside the ones that are gay or feminine-like, does a pretty boy have to sound like a female? Doesn't this bother any males out there? If the Jap female voice actors can do a proper male voice or a male child (this happens a lot), that would be plausible. But to hear a relatively grown male character sounding like a chick puts me off. Ok, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and i have stated mine. So you've heard bad dubs and don't like to hear it ever again, that's just generalisation. I'm not dissing subs altogether. So what if some translation was not right, in the end i still get the story. |

i didn't use to care if i watched a dub or a sub, but then i watched an anime that had the worst dubs EVER!!! since then, i only watch subs. At least the emotions aren't lost and the voices of the characters so ingratiatingly annoying... like nails dragging through a chalkboard... it makes me sick!

I can understand little boys and feminine types having female voices, but the others just don't sound right... |

I like both. I haven't heard a dub of an anime I liked that I thought sounded terrible. |
