normally, it would be referred to as the wives of a sultan. the word is normally encountered among muslim people, most of them being polygamous (i don't really know if this is true, but from what i've heard, it is. no offense meant.) *blip*  *blip* |

Muslim people are not polygamous. Not usually. There was a qualification made that basically says that you must treat all the wives exactly the same and without preference. And since this can't be done by the normal humans (we always have preferences), Muslims are almost always monogamous. Well Riku, since we are in the Anime section, I'm guessing that you have seen the word somewhere in that context. In that case a harem would be 2 or more women living and sleeping with one man. In the context though it is quite funny, since you only often see that description on more risky Anime and on hentai games. UncleChan |

Harem anime is about a guy who's pretty much surrounded by lots of girls. an example is LOve Hina Again     they laugh at us because we are different;we laugh at them because the are all the same... |

yup, precisely. typical harem anime is a comedy-ish series with 1 guy plus this huge variety of girls (5 or more >.>) who will all somehow mysteriously fall for him one way or another....... with a lot of embarassment and fanservice thrown in for good measure. |

From what I remember, harem refers to a place where a Muslim sultan's wives and concubines stay. As UncleChan has said, they are not necessarily polygamous. They can have more than one wife if he can provide for all of them. ^_^ |

The term "harem" was actually refering to the private space where the wives of some upper class polygamous middle-easterner would be cloistered, not the actual "herd" of wives themselves. The Harem thus, was a sort of private sanctum for women only in a manner of speaking. But to monogamous westerners, the term became synonymous with the idea of multiple wives or concubines. It might be a cultural holdover from the pre-Islamic days of the Middle East. Just like the burqa. (aka the "body tent") The "Harem Anime" is explained at www.animation.com by John of "Ask John". He says the term was used to describe what we used to call "romantic comedies" like Ranma 1/2 because of the situation of several characters being smitten by the main character. The same rule applies to shojo stories where a girl has many potential male admirers. |

i search the dictionary(BBC english dictionary) & it means a group of wives or mistresses belonging to one man,especially Muslim societies. Example: She'd been born and brought up in a harem.
