US Anime Distributers
|
I was wondering if anyone else out there feels that US anime distributers are milking every red cent from US anime fans by having their dvd releases so spread out. Also would it hurt them to place more than 5 episodes of an anime on a dvd. I understand all those "special" features take up a lot of space on a disk, but c'mon! I would gladly sacrifice all the bells and whistles so I can get more anime for my buck! At the current rate the US release of Naruto on dvd would take around 2 to 3 years or longer to release all the episodes on dvd! |

Those special features really barely take up space on the disc. It's the way they trick us to believe we're getting more but we're not at all. |

Some of these companies pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for the licensing rights just to have the ability to air a series. Factor in the costs of creating domestic discs, paying actors, and distributing the titles and the cost becomes astronomically high. Companies don't have a lot of choice when it comes to charging a lot for releasing a new series because of the amount of money they are paying for the series more than justifies it. Espcially during this time of frequent downloads and aholes literally ripping off companies.

Yeah, but the whole reason that more people are downloading is because the companies are spreading out releases and putting hardly anything on the disks. People aren't feeling that they're getting what they pay for. And you can argue all you want about the high costs of releasing an anime in the United States...but this isn't the situation in Japan, where they actually make the anime in the first place...a much more expensive proposition than dubbing it and re-releasing it. I actually do buy animes...but not when the disk price per amount of anime is ridiculous. Who's going to pay 30 dollars for a DVD with 3 episodes on it? |

That may not be the situation in Japan, but HERE is where we pay so those are the factors we have to consider. I'm not saying it is right. I am just saying that it's what the companies feel they have to do to break even or God forbid, make a profit.

But the more outrageous they make the prices, the less people will buy them. |

You're right. As long as people are willing to pay, companies will continue to do it. I don't mind having to pay $100 for a 26 episode box set. I have a problem with companies like Viz putting out 140+ episode series at a rate or 3-4 episodes a DVD at $30+ per DVD and then ratty box sets that are almost priced the same as buying the individual discs. As the number of consumers go down so will the quality of product released by the companies that are committed to these practices now.

What's more annoying is when they license an anime that's being fan subbed for free just before the translators can release the ending!
