The term 'Jpop'. . . what is it limited to?
Link | by Tasuki17502 on 2005-10-22 14:42:49
Many people at my school say that all Japanese music is considered 'Jpop.' I dont think that is correct at all! I always thought that all languages could have pretty much any kind of music. So if this is true, where does the term 'Jpop' end, and where do other terms begin? Can someone please tell me why everyone I know considers all Japanese music Jpop? I would also be intrested to know if our music (as in american bands and such) has any overseas terms like this. If anyone knows anything please step forward and share your opinion on this.

To answer why everyone considers all music from Japan 'Jpop', here in the U.S. of A., we love to think of ourselves as the best at EVERYTHING. Sports, science, tv, music, etc. When something comes from outside our borders we find one term for it, and everything following, no matter how dissimiliar, is now under that category. SO in a nutshell ignorance, 'cause anyone who has heard Jrap or enka would realize the level of variation.

And as for what qualifies as Jpop, it's basically like the U.S. If it sounds closer to rock, it probably is. If it sounds closer to pop, it probably is.

Not sure if this post actually adresses the issue at hand, but I hope it's of some use.

And yet another interpritation from the crowd:
As far as I'm concerned, it's just a slang term used just for personal opinionated catagorization. If you want to call it Jpop, fine, but I may not think so. It's not a dictionary term by any means. May I also refer you here.

Technically, "J-pop" would be any form of popular Japanese music. that's all.

Thank you for your help!

PyroNeko 28, I believe that you are correct about the reason for everyone calling Japanese music Jpop. I had never really thought about anything in those terms, and now that I really think about it, you are very correct. We really seem to like those general terms for almost everything.

psoplayer, you are also correct. Thanks a bunch for the site. I never thought of looking up the term on Wikipedia.

miyamoto, I would have to dissagree on the fact that ALL popular japanese music is considered Jpop. I would have to agree with the idea being the most popular opinion. However, I believe that is just a bit to general. It is much like the term anime. Just because it is called anime, that wont tell you what the show or movie is really about. It is not a genre, but simply a classification for the group in a whole.

Thanks again for your help and opinions.
