Remedies for colds...
Link | by S-a-c-h-i-e-l on 2005-10-25 14:16:18
Right now, I have THE most obnoxious cold I've ever had, and was wondering if there was some sort of trick or antidote for the "uncurable" cold. I really hate having to breathe through my mouth...

I don't know what symptoms I can't stand least. Basically, ALWAYS keep your neck and chest covered with something warm. LOADS of hot liquids like tea or even hot water. LOTS of hot foods. If you like spicey foods, go ahead. Anything to make you sweat. Or there's always good old chicken soup. HOT showers and sleep. There's just some stuff they don't teach you in school...

For the hot food and water, I could do ramen. It's hard to stay really warm, though... Sleep is hard for me... those showers I could most definitely do, though. Thanks, Kai!

Eat several cloves of garlic and drink strong mint tea before going to bed.

I just had a hot bowl of ramen, after which I drank all of the broth...It was hot broth... my mouth hurts T.T
Earlier today I had a warm cup of water, and soon I'm gonna take a hot shower. It's so nice hearing everyone help me... ^_^

Ya I was just kidding about the garlic.....
And the most that mint tea might do is temporarily clear your sinuses,
but thats what Vicks Vaporub was invented for.

And I didn't actually believe my old signature, I just had it there cuz I'd thought of it all by myself.

I changed it if you hadn't noticed.

Copy what they do in anime. Rice porriage and all.

I dont get how in anime people catch colds so easily. Like if the get a little bit soaked in the rain they get a cold, sleep with their stomach exposed and they get a cold. Sleep on the couch and a cold. They catch colds from everything. Are the Japanese really that prone to colds?

I once slept on a cold rock in the middle of winter, with only pants and a tshirt. They only thing I got were sore joints.

It's not that the Japanese are particularly prone to colds, I think. It's probably more because it's convenient for the author to have the character catch a cold at that time and they have to have some sort of justification for the cold so they make up something that could conceivably make someone sick.

As for what to do about colds--what works for me is lots of tea and warm showers. I don't know if it would work for anyone else though. Oh yes, and gargling Listerine really helps make a sore throat feel better temporarily. Just make sure that you don't swallow any by accident--I learned that the hard way.

I seem like I get colds every month, even in summer. I don't think there's any tea herbal tea in this whole house, so that kinda gets shot in the foot... especially since I forgot that milk is bad for colds, and bought a gallon of chocolate milk... And then Engineer says not to have any sweets... X_X

Actually it doesn't matter if you drink milk.

Thats just an old mith, supposedly if you drink milk it causes mucus build-up. But then wouldn't our noses always be plugged?

Milk does cause mucus build up. Believe me, I know all about it--whenever I drink milk, epsecially if I have a cold...let's not get too into the details here, since we're talking about SNOT! The effect is not very dramatic (except when I have a cold!) but it is there. At least for me it is. Maybe I'm slightly allergic to milk? Although this does not keep me from drinking it.

Now that I think of it, I get the same effect (to a lesser degree) from chocolate and cheese, both of which are made from milk.

So maybe it's dairy that causes a slight build up??

Normally the mucus will flow out of ya nose when u do things( when u r awake and not resting). Thats why the medicine for cold normally makes u wanna sleep because when u rest the mucus would not flow out and yor body recovers faster that way. Well actually this was what i ve experience every time i gotta cold.
