What are some tips for beginners at DDR? Like step motion and so you feel comfortable at it.

Some tips I have are
1)stay at a tempo you are comfortabe with
2)start by shadowing somebody
3)always challenge yourself. You will never get better if you don't push your limits.

Ignore what the beginner dancer does, don't step back to the center after every note.
Don't be afraid of looking stupid.
Don't give up in the middle of a song.

I'll add my input (probably will include what others said but that just makes it all the more important!).

For starters, getting onto a dance pad (arcade or home) is the first step. Don't feel afraid to look stupid. You're new, you can't help it =P. Refining that can come later.

Now, just have fun! Really. Just mess around on songs you like with step patterns you feel are fun. Once you get comfortable enough moving around, here's where you start pushing yourself.

Find a range you can do well at. Choose stuff slightly above it. Not so much you fail it, but just enough to "feel the burn" as you push your muscles. Find a routine, that's challenging, but fun enough to keep you from getting discouraged. Stick to it, until you feel that you are more capable now, and step up to the next level. This is a physical game, so without confidence in yourself, your body won't be willing to move.

This part, some may disagree with, some might agree, but getting a high combo will not be your purpose until later. I personally believe that your next goal is to build your stamina so you can keep up with high streams of steps. How I'd do this? See "choose a routine..." in above paragraph, except go a bit harder on yourself. If you get tired, rest. You definitely don't want to break yourself. But remember, the harder you push, the more you grow.

Finally, when you feel confident in your ability to keep up with songs, try to combo it!

I'd keep going but I basically told you how I started myself up. It took me 3 weeks to beat Heavy for the first time. It might take you longer. Just whatever you do, don't get discouraged. You WILL get better as time goes by, and you WILL reach that spot you long for.

keke, this is late, but oh well, i'll just add some stuff.

My friends come over a few times a week during spare, and we play my mats in the basement. I've found out how to get a non-DDR person to start off pretty well in light mode.

(I'm assuming, probably unfairly, that you have access to mats and a game already).

1. Get used to the spaces and placement of the arrows. Get on the mat, hop around a bit w/o looking to get the feel of it. My friends use the tiles in my basement when they're waiting around.

2. The music is your friend. If you notice, the arrows in the routine correspond with major beats in the music. If you relax, glance at the arrows as they are going up, and step when you approximate the beat in the song is going to hit, your body usually responds pretty well. I've seen begginers who stare only at the top line, ignore the music entirely, and try to stomp when they see the arrow light up (or they look down and try to stomp when the arrow lights). This seldom works.

3. psoplayer mentioned not returning your feet to the middle after stepping, and i agree. Returning your feet to the middle takes time and energy and isn't efficient at all. Just keep your feet on your last move, and wait until you hit the next arrow to move. If you look at advanced DDR players, their feet generally don't even touch the middle (unless they're freestyling or showing off or whatever). So, keep your center of balance in the middle, but not your feet.

4. phant0mh0b0's opinion is that combos at the beggining don't matter, and i suppose that's true. However, eventually, even in light mode, you will find that you will come across the same combinations. It's a good idea to practice these combos and become familiar with them (for example, the basic right-up-down-left move), because the game just builds increasingly hard variations through the levels of the basic combos most of the time. You need the building blocks, right? Also, you can figure out the most efficient way to step the combo ahead of time. What my novice DDR friend does when she has time to kill is just use an unplugged mat to practice combos i shout out (like, maybe up-down-hopupdown-hopleftright). This gets her to figure out which feet movements are the best for the combos. Generally, you don't want to cross your feet in DDR, unless it's in double mode. That's just making your balance disadvantaged.

Anyway, those are my tips for the begginer, and I hope you have some use for them! There is stuff i didn't comment on, like picking a level to challenge yourself, but I'm assuming you're really really starter.

Have fun!

Hmm sounds fun to me. i think i need practice cos i don't have sense of rhythm. not at all. I tried playing in PS2 using Joystick only. I cannot do that already don't talk about the real dance. Lol. >.>

Just to give you the heads up, I didn't mean disregard step patterns and go crazy-go-nuts wild, but rather just don't stress over not getting a full combo until later. I think PA'ing (Perfect Attack:Going for the highest percentage of Perfects you possibly can, which will also give you a higher score) or even SDG (Single Digit Greats:Getting only Perfects and Greats, with having only 1-9 Greats, all the rest Perfects) just takes stamina away faster. And we certainly don't want our friends to get bored after playing Butterfly over and over trying to Full Combo it =P. Hence, just cut loose and go crazy-go-nuts. Keep the patterns in mind though and as windchomper mentioned, try to figure out the most efficient way to step to the sequence.

When the announcer yells "Are you watching the sequence OK?" He means it XD.

Oh and since nobody mentioned this yet...

In most cases of DDR, about a good 70%~80% of the songs will always have you alternating feet, such as:

Sequence:Left, Down, Up, Right.
Feet:Left, Right, Left, Right.

But occasionally, you'll see:

Sequence:Left, Down, Right, Up.
Theoretically, you'd have to step:
Left, Right, Left, Right.

But that leaves you in an awkward position (try it out).

So for those, you should figure out what feels right for you.

To sum up my statement:
Try to keep alternating your feet, it will make you lose stamina alot slower (imho). Occasionally you will face situations where that is basically impossible, without losing balance, or getting tired. Figure out what feels right for you there.

Examples of those two types of step patterns:
Flowing:Dead End[Heavy]
Erratic:Healing Vision Angelic Mix[Heavy]

Don't necessarily play them, but if you get the chance to watch those, just pay attention to the different styles of step patterns.

Here's advice anyone can use

1. Mostly pay attention to the beat NOT the notes
2. If u lose track of where u are, stop and start again where u can keep up. U wont get big points but u will learn to keep track of the rythym.
3. NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER!!lol
4. Dont try to show off

1)keep to the beat try to find out the rhythm of the song. the game makers didnt just put a whole bunch of random steps there just to laugh at you struggling to do them
2)if u have to stop and wait a bit till u can go with the beat again dont be like me when i was noob and try to do steps you arent ready for you never know when u might twist something ><
3)YAH!!! never give up! if u think DDR is fun just wait till u get heavy ^^ and think about it this way when u get pro you can show off on the pad and impress the chicks =D i know a lotta cute asian girls who play ddr at my HS
4)yeh when your noob dont try to show off by like spinning keeping hands in pockets (which looks gay by the way) and other stuff like that just learn how to play with the beat for now then show off when you pro ^^

well here
1. don't put your foot back on the square all it will do is mess you up when you advance levels.

2.don't think about if people are looking at you! that will also mess up your footing to the beat of the song.

3. have fun!

if you love someone and that person doesn't love you ....don't be sad because one day you will have someone who loves you too. :3

What are some good songs to start with?

Re: Tips for beginners

Some good songs to start with for DDR is to have songs that are:

1. Slow
2. Few steps
3. Minimum of 2-4 double jumps
4. Pick a song that you have the groove to it >_<
