Hi. I would like to hear your reccomendations of the top classical anime OSTs in existence. Please also state your musical expirience if you have any (just out of curiosity,it does not mean anyone's opinion will be valued over others, unless of course you portray yourself as unintelligent...)
I, of course, have my own pre concieved notions, but I will share them after in order to allow unbiased oppinions. Thank you very much!!!

evangelion would be the best, but technically, it's because they "borrow" other famous guy's works, so there's nothing new. duh.

people are going to recommend works by the usuals: kanno, kajiura, etc.
but the way they synthesize the music makes it seem too artificial for me to be accepted as classical.

my favorite two are: 'sakura wars "ouka kenran" hikarirokuonkan'
composed by Kouhei Tanaka (ova soundtrack) and

'shiki - song for ritsuko okazaki' (from fruits basket - the non-vocal tracks)

musical experience? does it suffice to say that i listen to classical out of a pair of sennheiser hd-650?

love 'em. most of the music I download are classical and instrumental.
ditto on bill. eva has the best! but, for me, it doesn't matter if they did borrow since at least they know what to pick. besides, the time the music were made---baroque era, the mood of that time highly jives with eva. ^^

Excellent, all of you more or less confirmed my suspicions and my personal preferences. I would, however, argue that eva is NOT up there on my list in terms of actual classical (not that it's far down either, mind you), not because of the classical works, but because the majority is not original and borrowed. Overall I have very good things to say about it, the way those pieces are used is phenomonal and all of the performance is excellent, but it does not have the classical inflections of the type of ost I was referring to.....in my opinion. My personal favorate is the Escaflowne ost for classical ost, closely followed by a plethora of others; the mix of good original comp from Kanno and the performance by the Warsaw Phil. is outstanding.

PS. I must also respectfully remind that equipment is no substitute for the presence of hands on musical expirience in any capacity.

The entire OST for Princess Mononoke is excellent as well. There was only one track that had lyrics, if I am correct.

As far as my musicl experience goes...
I have played in band from 6th grade to the current date. That puts me at 10 years of musical experience. I don't play professionally, but I am currently a member of Minnesota Brass Inc., in which there are some people that have played professionally before.

I am still very partial to the Rurouni Kenshin: Isshin Shishi Requiem movie soundtrack. Most of the selections performed by Taro Iwashiro's strings section and the flute are simply beautiful. I can sit with my eyes closed listening to the soundtrack for hours. I only played trumpet for four years with a high school band, I am nowhere near a professional.

let's see...
i do not think that the soundtracks of any anime are really truly in the classical style. although orchestrated, none fall under the styles of the classical era. (please do not take the generalized "none" as an absolute statement)
the music should be seen as contemporary classical.
whoa i keep saying "classical"
ehhhh am i making sense? i hope so =)
btw, spirited away contains some pretty satisfying music!

No, you are correct, I should have clarified myself. I understand that what you percieved in my referral was music from the classical era, as considered by any other musical period (eg. baroque, romantic, contemporary ect) I should have replaced the word classical with *orcestral*, as this encompasses all of what we view to be 'classical' music without becoming era-specific. However, I would also argue that not all of the orcestral music which we listen to is contemporary in nature. The most forthcoming example I can think of Yokko Kanno draws heavily from the influences of Carl Orff (Carmina Burana) and Giusuppe Verdi (the Requiem Mass) in many of her works in Escaflowne (especially in the pieces Danse of Curse, Blaze and Black Escaflowne. I would also highly reccomend listening to those two composers if you subscribe to the ideas in this forum, as their music is amazing!

*I realize that I have not stated my musical expirience either, how rude of me. I have been playing Trumpet as a student for 8 years know, and have expirience in Concert Band, Orcestra and Jazz Band , as well as various brass ensembles and solo (I do not play professionally, although I have been hired for various functions such as weddings.).

Also, just in case the trumpet player wanted to know, my equipment consists of a Bach Stradivarius 18037, a Shilke 14 mpc for orcestral/band work and a Marcinkewicks Bobby Shew 2 for lead work in jazz.

lol i also forgot to state my musical experience, I played piano when i was young for only two years and organ for few months, and i played clarinet for concert band from 6th grade to 9th grade then again in 11th grade (now), i was thinking of quitting. and i also play a traditional instrument of my country

oh yeah, some songs from rurouni kenshin is classical, the one that i remembered quite well is Moonlight Sonata composed by Beethoven....but i feel that most that i mentioned gives a classical music feeling for me, particularly Sokyuu no Fafner's OST, that is played by Warsaw symphony ochestra for the whole series. I always enjoyed OST that is played by professional full orchestra. Most of the rpg games ost are also played by London symphony orchestra.
