May I suggest...
Link | by lady_rin on 2005-12-10 21:30:26 (edited 2005-12-10 21:30:54)
Tonight I am at Ya's house and they still have dial up. It made me aware of something here at Gendou I didn\'t know about until tonight. Many of you have still have dial-up, my connection right now is 45kbps, and a lot of us are starting to use signatures. The Gendous avas are about 4k, some of the other avas and sigs are considerabley larger than that on the order of 15-30kb each.

I would like to suggest that we try to keep the file sizes of our avas and sigs down to keep Gendou working at reasonably fast speeds for those of us/you who still have dial-up. If we do it on our own then we never have to make a rule about it just post a set of guidelines. I don\'t know how big or what kind of a limit though. Maybe no more than 50KB or less per person for all sigs and avas combined.

Any comments?

non-sequiter: It's in the low 40s right now and it's only 9:30pm. For us that's late considering the time we get up in the morning so it's time for bed. We are at 6.000ft/180-0m(?) elevation and it's very cold outside and going down below freezing. A warm nightie and a warm husband will be very cozy tonight.

I know what you mean my connection is 49.2 right now.

Aye, I agree.
Let's limit avatars and signatures to minimum for dial-up users. Well, that includes me. Speed: 31.2Kbps

My image size is small, I purposely decreased it to make it more 56k friendly. My avatar, I'm not sure though...

Edit: Signature is 23 KB, avatar is 9 KB.

Of course it will work. The moderators set a good example by doing it themselves and the rest of the community does as well. If someone has files too large, like teasing we can ask them to reduce it.

I looked at your filesizes and they are over 50K total. The interesting thing is the two smaller images are each larger than the bigger one. *giggles*

To find the file's size, right click on the image and choose image properties. To reduce the files size you need a paint program like PhotoShop or Paintshop, which I prefer. If you don't know how please ask and I shall be happy tell you or do it for you.

My connection is 42.6 Kbps every day.

Gomen... but I don't understand, Lady Rin.
I thought it's all about the height, that it shouldn't be more than 100px for signatures and 25px for avatars. I did actually set my avatar lower than 25px to 20px, and signatures to 80px. I believe, I saw a "hint" there in the profile modifications.

Oh dear. Let me see if I can explain.

A files size is determined by how it is saved, gif, jpg, png. Once saved unless oyu process it again it will not change size.

When you put your tags in {}=<>

{img src="http://url/dir1../dir2/filename.gif" height="25" align="absmiddle"}

You are constraining the height of the frame the picture is displayed in to 25 pixels and the image is cinstrained by that. However The filesize remains the same since oyu did not change the file itself.

I shall offer to compress any images you like as long as I don't get too many at once. Personally I think the maximum size for a sig should be about 400x100px since that's what some forums use as a guide line. I don't suppose it matters how many images go into that 4 images each 100x100px

Don't forget this is not a restriction, it is so we can keep Gendou running at a reasonable speed for the dial-up members. Lots of small images load faster than a few large ones.

I know that very well, Rin-san. What I want to know is, uggh.. nevermind. But thanks for the explanation. ^_^;
Well, if you can do something about my avatars and signatures, I'd gladly appreciate it. But try not to... you know? (lol) I like them the way they are. Hehehe... Arigatou gozai masu, honto ni.

I believe there is actually a rule in the FAQ/Help section that tells you the limit size for avatars and sigs, but it's just that most people here dont bother reading the rules, if anything at all.

i could always make a lo-bandwidth option that strips <img> tags, for 56k-ers
or, you could set your browser to not load images.

It seems like a bit of trouble to set the browser to not load images at all; most of the time, you need images in a page just to navigate it and it would be a hassle to disable them just while browsing the forum. The low bandwidwidth option is possible, maybe just strip img tags from signatures (and posts?); most avas seem to be small enough.
@Rin: Images are easy to reduce in size most of the time, but animated images are quite a bit more problematic, especially when they use combined frames with transparancy. Usually they end up looking crappy after resizing. If you have a good way to make animations smaller, I would like to hear it.

I knew there was a reason I was worried about teaching Rin HTML.

Try animation shop. It's outstanding for reducing and optimizing animated images. Best I've found.

NEW RULE: file size limit

Did you make a type Gendou-sama? It reads 500kbs file limit.

^^;; sorry, I never really even thought of that, I'm on cable

I'll just have to cycle my sigs once a week or something :P

@rin: sorry, what do you mean by "type"? I just added the rule to the faq.

She means typo, I think... 500 kb for signatures/avatars sounds ridiculously large... 50 would sound more reasonable...

Re: May I suggest...
Link | by psoplayer on 2005-12-13 21:43:57
Yes, 500kb is half a megabyte. That would take over a minute at the theoretical maximum speed of 56.6kbps dialup (~0.4 MB/sec). 100k or 50k is much more reasonable.
