What good does swearing do?
Link | by S-a-c-h-i-e-l on 2005-12-12 21:38:10
I've thought about this for a long time, and asked questions about it, but now I'm totally baffled... Why exactly do people swear? I've heard "Because people like to" "Because it does a better job at punctuating sentences" Because this, because that... Seriously, you don't need to swear to accomplish stuff. How often has someone actually been glad you swore? How often has someone gotten a little let down or whatever because you swore? Please help me on this...

Swear related stuff:

Aside from biblical swear words, how did those words actually get bad? What first separated them from the other words as "bad"?

Don't you think it's sad that to make movies more realistic, people throw in more swears? What does that say about our society?

Yes, I did use the word "Swear" a total of 8 times in this post...

its not swearing.....swearing is GOOD.
Cursing is BAD.

Plus the bible calls them curse words not swear words.

Bible says its good to swear, not good to curse.

I just said the same thing THREE times.....0.o.....

But I do agree with you.....even though I am guilty of saying some....
I only say them when I get mad REALLY mad, but I don get mad often.

Guy B : Woi, you broke my window!
Guy A : It was an accident... sry..
Guy B : Dont blaff me.. i saw it by my own eye..!!
Guy A : I really did it by an accident..!! I swear!!
Guy B : Stop acting that you are innocent =.="
Guy A : I swear!! If i really did break the window by purpose, I will die by lighting..!!

I don't approve of coarse or foul language nor do I use it myself except for the occasional damn or hell which seems to be acceptable. I have washed out Mu and Ky's mouth with soap for using that kind of language. It took even longer to break Ranger of the habit and he still swears on occasion.

While I find vulgar language unacceptable in most instances, there are always exceptions; entertainment, art and literature for example. Still I have walked out of the cinema, turned off a TV show or video and stopped reading books when I think it goes beyond the bounds of art and entertainment. Pulp Fiction for example which used 'F' 271 times.

Do not misunderstand me and think I'm a prude. For some reason people think that because I don't like foul language.

Google 'F' I think your going to be surprized at what comes up.

Here is a good example of the F word in entertainment. Click for new window.

BTW: I really appreciate one thing about the membership at Gendou. The lack of foul language. Thank you.

Thanks you for clearing that up... What good does using curse words do? should be the title.

lol, Rin, I got about 20 seconds through the movie before I closed the window.

Using the word "Hell" I might occaisonally use, as long as it's pertaining to the area hell, not using it in a crude way (example: Go to ****!) I'll also say "God" or "Jesus" in the same way... I really think swea-- cursing is useless.

Good job Rin for cleaning out your kids (both ways ^_~).

i swear a lot. almost everyone does.. especially at my age. usually, if u grew up with korn, deftones, tv and all that, you just cant help it, especially if you are a guy. anyway, cursing does no good. it may add extra emotion to a declaration but youre putting yourself down in the process(at least in the eyes of the mature). Well, i guess thats just what it is.. immaturity. im really trying to grow up and stop cussing all the time but its quite hard to undo things youve started since you were a kid. just as sachiel said.. "Good job Rin for cleaning out your kids".

love & peace

I really had a swearing problem, it started getting better as I watched anime, but I still swore alot. It was Gendou forums that made it so I stopped swearing, It was actually really hard for me to type all posts without swearing for the longest time.

I believe sometimes I still use them. Im suck at polite speech.

The problem of excessive use of profanity is a very big thing, but sadly, nobody really pays much attention to it, so frequently is it used. A great big insult to humanity it is, that we would use such tastelessly ostentatious words! In fact, one of the reasons on that is because few people know much about it, or really care enough. It's so sad how thy've become words in our everyday language-seemingly, we have fallen so low, in that such vulgarity that those words are incorporated into our daily vocabulary, indeed, even more than more dignified words that would express our meaning in a much more polite and gentile way. Many of the words target certain groups, genders, and actions. Thus, these now commonly used words insult not just the one person that you direct it at, but at everyone else as well. Profanity is also a crutch, and prevents people, especially -the younger ones among which it is so prevalent, from using better, more sophisticated words. Swearing in the media supposedly maintains authenicity of topic or whatever it is that it covers. Realistic? That's plain sad. At the moment, I'm doing a project in school covering this issue, regarding the problems that swearing may cause, and how it could be changed.

Yes, firemiste, exactly my point. And kudos for the school project too. If we tried really hard, we could change the world!! AND MAKE IT OURS TO RULE!!

Something I've rarely seen, but is so ridiculously sad that it shows how poor our society is, is people that swear and swear and swear like it was us saying "fact" or "which" or "other". They swear and curse soooo much, it's almost half of their vocab. THAT is what ticks me off. Seriously, do you even need those words?

Example:
What the f***ing h***? Why the f*** are you f***ing drawing that f***ing dumba** picture?
What the heck? Why are you drawing that dumb picture?

Same results, only one is wayy better than the first.

My question is, "why is it BAD?"

Seriously, everyone just says it's bad for some reason. There doesn't seem to be anything to support it. What, exactly, does swearing DO that's so bad you have to wash your kid's mouths out?

It only makes you feel bad if you're anti-swear word. A lot of the people I know swear at least occasionally, and I hear it in music and movies and stuff a lot, but it doens't make me feel *bad.*

It was a bit weird at first, since my parents are EXTREMELY against swearing, but the taboo washes off within a week.

Moreover, swearing serves a useful purpose. Sure, you could say "darn" or something instead, but why is that so different? And why don't you get upset when someone says "THAT IS SOOOO KAWAIII!!~~!~~ONE!" instead of saying "I think it's k******."? The strength is the same in either case, but for some reason, it's bad when you curse.

If you can say that something is good, doesn't it also go that you can say that something is bad? Seriously, doesn't saying that something is good automatically insinuate that other things are bad?

And the fact is, Christianity (or I guess I should say, its holy book) has nothing much to say on cursing OR swearing. The only thing prohibited is=, specifically, using its god's name in vain - and since it is the god with no name, this seems pretty difficult to me.

i am agreeing with Seculi Terminus on this one cause in a way, even though swearing to some people are bad but to some others who think that swearing is good...it's good to them...everyone has a different persective about words and how it is express and in what way, and especially under the cursing area, this is one area where people tends to debate a lot weither it's bad or good....though my parnets really dislike me and my lil brother swearing, they themselves swear sometimes so it's it natural that you let something out and sometimes you might not even know that you say it till someone tells you!

And another problem I have is, why does everyone get so mad about it?

I mean, if you don't like to swear, then don't. But why does that mean you have to make everyone stop swearing, too?

These words also came up by society. Each of these words has a true meaning that just got stressed out. The F word came from a police description of a criminal. I do not recall exactly what it was though. Also, they were deemed unacceptable by society. Many "curse" words were acceptable and were used in everyday speech. If you watch any older versions of "Looney Toons", they use the A word and the B word a lot. I will admit, I cuss or curse quite a bit. I have gotten better, but when I'm joking with friends are extremely upset they calm me down. The only reason I do not post them, or at least try my best not to post them, because they offend people. I'm in no mood on upsetting people, and if I do use these words in public if someone is offended by my outbursts then I apologize and stop. To me they are just words, they stress anger a bit, but are not used professionaly. I would never go up to a person of high standards or to a young child and curse(swear). Most of the time I do this in the privacy of my car(road rage) or joking with my friends, like I stated before. Sorry to say, I watched that video Rin posted before and laughed with all my friends. Even my "proper" friends found it somewhat amusing. I just think, people need to use them conservatively and make sure it doesn't upset the people around them.

That's my post for the month, week, lol. I keep forgetting about the site so I only post every once in a while =P.

The way I see it, if people don't like swearing for no reason, they are two things you could do. 1) Swear and make points until you persuade them to swear, or 2) Don't swear at all and don't offend people in the first place.

And yes, I've wondered greatly how swear words, with the exception of biblical ones, are bad.

And just a note, I'm not trying to get others to stop swearing, I'm trying to figure out what swearing and stuff really is...

TO SACHIEL, the only good for cursing is that, it exemplifys a persons mood strongly, its like when your writting and you put in quotation marks, a particular point. THIS shows you are realy pointing out this part of, what you have to say.

Sachiel, swearing formed basically when society deemed those words as harmful words. Each one had an alternate meaning before people started to abuse them and give them double meanings. The A word means donkey, B means female dog, I do not recall what the D one meant, and the F word was a police description of a certain degree of a sexual offender. Of course, with the F word there were more words in it. Basically, people started saying these words towards people, and using them in other forms, and it was said to be vile, and rude. So the great people that like to censor things, basically turned them into swearing. I do not recall when exactly they were deemed curse words, but I do know they were once acceptable by society. Also, if people do get offended by these words do not go to New York City. The F word is all over that place and everyone that lives there uses that word. Well not everyone, just most people.

Swearing only makes you look stupid and childish. I usually laugh at people who swear. Nowadays, it's so diluted and mixed with so many meanings that the words themselves don't mean anything.

Here's a little fun:

or

Thou slander of thy heavy mother's womb!

You pussy

or

You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.

And if you want something fancy:
[Thou] leathern-jerkin, crystal-button, knot-pated, agatering, puke-stocking, caddis-garter, smooth-tongue, Spanish pouch!

If old Shakes insulted me, I would be like "Speak english you jackass."

I think curse words for insults are good because it saves so much time than having to Shakespeare all your insults.

I think Japan has it down. Instead of insults, they have rude ways to address some one. Its not foul language that makes you look stupid, but it gets the point accross.

That is true...swearing might be one way for people to express their inner emotion that cannot be expressed in just regular old words....
