Today, I was in a bookstore, reading manga (yeah, I'm too cheap to buy it), and I realized that while manga is more or less acknowledged worldwide, American comics are stuck in a small niche. My question is why has the American comic industry failed? |

I think because it was great in the past and probably got boring to all those comic fans. |

Aye, that's what I'd do too. If you can read it, why not? Though some bookstores won't allow reading inside. Also, mangas were plastic-covered so customers won't be able to peek in, and the only way would be is to consider buying it (they sure are smart arses). =X American comics lack that something which mangas have in particular. And mangas are trendy. It's rare for me to see people reading comics nowadays, especially my 'ol-time favorite, Archie comics; when me and a friend would trade. But now, we would trade mangas along with CDs/DVDs. |

about the bookstores that seal mangas in plastic wraps, the bokstore I go to does not do that. Trading mangas on CDs is a good idea to me, never tried it before. I go online to read mangas. |

Salesmen and saleswomen are wicked over here! And not only would they seal mangas 'n comics, they'd include the latest magazine, a journal of this 'n that, novels, some books; everything with paper is all wrapped-up. At least they're transparent, or they'd obscure the back page where the synopsis is usually seen; then you'd have the slightest idea of what to buy and not. |

Not in where I live at least. They never wrap it up. I get to read it before getting it. ^_^ |

about reading the mangas instead of buying them, i see your point. i do that if i'm wanting to know what the story is about. or i'll go to the local library and check out the first couple volumes and if it interests me enough, i'll go buy them. but i can't just sit there in the bookstore, read an entire book and not buy it, esp. mangas. too many people, esp the artists, have worked too hard on those things for us to do that. think about it, if everyone did that, pretty soon, there would be no manga left to enjoy 'cause they'd all be out of business. support the artist! |

Aye, I see your point, Aimes-san. I do support artists, because I think that it's cool to collect stuff and better to have your own copy (especially those from game OSTs). Definitely, I'd buy the whole OST, while my friends would discourage me because you can download almost everything from the net without having to go to a local anime shop to spend big money. I really adore Nobuo Uematsu's and Yasunori Mitsuda's compositions that's why I see to it that I get what they actually produce! |

i agree to that doomy, one of the downfall of american comics is the overly mascular artwork, especially those too colorful costumes... most comic characters looked like they're on steroids! another thing is the storylines are too cliche'd... but the old comics are still kinda cool... anyway regarding to the issue where bookstores seals mangas and magazine...my friends and i usually open them when no saleslady is looking and then return them back or hide them underneath other magazines when we're done...hehehehehe but that was before i can afford those mangas...hehehehehe |

Maybe you are right, they are falling down, mainly for the reason that generations are changing, and the likes of people are continuously changing. There will come a time that Mangas will be deppreciated too, and when that time comes, we must face it with courage and just try not to let it be buried. |
