Re: why do they dub when they can sub??

maybe some people are too lazy to read the subs...sometimes, the subs go faster than people can read them, so they dub instead. of course, they're probably wondering why we would read the sub rather than listen to the dub. |

I think it's simply a matter of personal opinion... I'm all for subs, but my brother thinks that I'm an idiot for liking subs more than dubs. |

If a voice dosn't sound right on the dubbed version, than I'll buy the DVD for the subbed to see if its better. But lately anime dubbing has been good, like Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop. Marse Hughes |

For the benefit of those people who're too lazy to read and who can't seem to get along with Japanese. I know some people who don't actually set their eyes on TV when watching, when they could simply lend an ear while doing something 'n whatnot. And I don't think they'd be able to understand if they're only subtitled. Of course, listening to Japanese is something they could not endure. Though they make fun of me when I practice my Japanese (How could they? They watch Japanese thingies and make fun of me?! How rude! I just wish that Naruto wasn't dubbed in Tagalog! >=D). When it's sub, there are two things that bother me: (1) You have to focus your eyes on TV and not mind what's going on around you, or else... if your cellphone rings and you need to type some messages, sip some from your coffee, arrange things, or just look around, you'll miss one line! Then it's screwed! (2) They're surprisingly incoherent and I doubt that it's exactly what their speaking of. I've watched two Rurouni Kenshi OVAs, one dub and one sub. o_O; I could pinpoint all the differences! And I was like... "Hey! He didn't say something like this... Wtf?" However when it's dub, it's not always good too. Heck, I've experienced TERRIBLE dubbers here! Some really sucked, some sounded gay and uggh... dunno the rest, just undefined. >.< And aye, incoherence of translations too. It applies to both. Personally, I like subs 'cause they retain the original voices. =X |

a good example of a poor dub is the Fushigi Yuugi series. i have both seasons and started to watch the dub version but got really iritated by Miaka's "barbie" voice, so i switched it to the original sub version...MUCH better and i was able to pick up some Japanese along the way, not too bad since I'm studying it anyway! |

For people who dont like to listen to japanese i guess. "Some people dont wanna hear a voice THAT high"- thats what my dad said. -I agree that Miaka'a engligh voice was crap. Her VA was good in 'Magic Knight Rayearth' but for fushigi Yuugi...? NO...just...no. |

Their main target audience likes the dubs, that is why. Bigger market, than just catering to the hardcore anime fans who like subs. Too big of a risk to release sub-only. |

myabe little kids cant read...or have reading difficulties. and dubs can make the anime more for little kids(eg CCS). If you sub it more for the little kids who can read and are japnese born in america or something they're gonna go "the translations wrong!"
Ignore my typos!

maybe its for the people who is just too lazy to read subtitles...or maybe they're blind...(what? that's ridiculous!) |
Re: why do they dub when they can sub??

Maybe because if animes were sub then people watching them would be drawn away from what's going on because they would have to focus on the subtitles to understand what they're saying and I really can't multi-task when it comes to sub animes. Doesn't mean I don't like them I own two sub animes hehe. |
Re: why do they dub when they can sub??

Some of my friends are just into dubbed anime but when i bring in subbed stuff they always complaining about the subs going too fast and then they dont have time to watched the show because their reading the subs in its place. |

Some people just dislike subs. I love them. To me, the dubs just doesn't sound right. Some don't. I laugh at them. They laugh at me. The world goes round. |

I would rather have it dubs than subs. You can call me lazy...I don't really care. Some dubs are pretty accurate anyway. |

I like subs, don't (gasp) have a problem with dubs. Sometimes, I want to do something like draw or write, and can't focus on a screen. I'd say that's part of the answer. Think about it: These series maybe sold on DVD, but there's more money in selling it to a broadcasting company and having it air on TV, so to keep the viewing audience wide, they change voices to avoid loss of viewership to 'those weird voices'. Plus remember any station showing a series is interested in how many people will tune in so ad companies pay for the ad slot. Just because someone isn't actively looking at the screen doesn't mean they don't count as a viewer. |

My biggest problem with subs is that if theres action and talking, than I can't keep up and I'm like "umm..somthing blew up...and thats all I know" I'd hate to watch DBZ on subs because I'd miss everything lol. Marse Hughes |

I watch subs when there isn't a dub, or vile people like 4Kids get their hands on it. Otherwise, I'll watch the dub, since some of them are actually really good, like Outlaw Star or s-CRY-ed. |
