How much would we like a piece of anime music (vocal, bgm, whatever), if it weren't for the visual? No doubt MTV proved the power of visual accompanying the sound. There are records (US) I bought in the 80s I won't even admit to buying today. If anything, anime music seems to have even more pronounced effect on me. There are sounds that just absolutely grates me went I hear it the first time, but by episode 13 or 14, I'm crawling on my belly down to Wax Trax with my last dollar to reserve my copy of an obscure import. Hack, I've even bought (unknowingly) cd-dramas for the prize of couple of songs. In contrast, I don't owe any J-pop CDs or records that's not related to an anime show (or movies for that matter, i.e. Juzo Itami's A Taxing Woman) that I have seen. In fact, outside of traditional Enka music which I really like, and electro sounds bordering on experimental (the realm where Japan modern sound is best and most inventive at), I found most J-pop to be unoriginal and derivative.

Anime is nothing without J-Pop or J-Rock, etc..... For me, I don't own any anime music cds myself but I still like anime music. Bottome line is, if you really like Japanese music, then of course you must like anime music. I don't have to own any anime jap cds to show that I like anime music. I like anime music as much as I love rock, rap, reggae and as for any other type of music out there. There's no difference in that except for the language. |

Hearing songs from anime fostered my interest in japanese music. MTV? I don't have cable but I do download PVs of songs and they never disappoint me. I listen to more Eastern than Western music, anything ranging from Japanese, Chinese, Korean music. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I flavor foreign songs over Western songs. After growing up in a Western society I admit I got bored with the music. Listening to Jap. music also helps me learn the language. Few years ago I had no clue what Ayu, BoA or any jap artist sang. Today, I'm happy to say that I understand the majority of the lyrics without referring to translation sites. ^_^ |
