Come one, come all; tell of your experiences of playing DDR in public! Whether it be at an arcade, or soft pads set up at a video game/electronics store (or any store), it doesn't matter! Tell of your most embarrasing/glorious moment, what you liked/disliked about it, or whatever is relevant! Okay okay, I'll start already. :P I've been playing DDR for years now (6?) and I love playing in public. I don't care what people think of me when I start hopping around to loud music. It's just great! When I first started, I was like everyone else: I sucked. But over the course of a month or two, I improved tenfold. My first experience was actually in an 'adult' arcade. No, not adult as in lewd. :P There just happened to be a machine at the place where my cousin's wedding reception was being held. You couldn't even walk out without the supervision of someone 21 and up. Anyway, my brother and I wanted to check out this arcade, and we see the DDR USA machine. We've really been wanting to play that game for so long, so we got out there (with our parents) and started playing. Having never played before, the flashy colors and loud music seemed intimidating. But my brother and I got over that and played for a while. I always read stories about crowds gathering around a machine to see what was going on, and well.. one such crowd gathered! It was a pretty awesome experience. After we played a few games, we got off the machine and checked other stuff out. Then these two girls (sisters maybe, one was younger than the other) started playing. I actually thought they wouldn't do well. Boy was I wrong; they played everything on Maniac, and I was just stunned. Giddy too because they were cute, :P but mostly just impressed. After that fateful day, my brother and I scoured the internet for more machine locations. And thus became our entrance into the NorCal DDR scene. Anyone else have good (or bad) stories? :D Don't be shy now! :) |

Sure I enjoyed playing DDR games on publics or malls. Sure many people love to watch your move if you are really good enogh. When they saw you dancing, most people will be inspired on your moves if you are really good. Sure it is really so much fun! |

Having played for a long time, I sure had my share of experiences. If I see a machine, console setup, or anything resembling DDR, I'll take my shot at it. People usually underestimate me because I'm a big guy, since the whole stereotype is that overweight people aren't good at physical things like this. But once I start stepping, people's attention turn to how fast my legs (and feet? :P) are moving. :) I'm trying to get back into it because I need to lose weight and regain my stamina, so I hope that DDR SuperNova comes out soooooooooooooooooon. $40 games, here I come?! XD |

I was playing at an arcade near my home recently, and I was completely outdone by two guys. It was kind of an eye opening experience for me, because I'm not good. T_T |

I find it very fun to have someone think I'm a n00b at DDR when I take intrest in it at a lan party or something and they start trying to explain the basics to me. Then they set me up on a beginner song and I play it. Then I want to pick a song on my own and 'accidentally' put it on heavy or challenge when I pick it. Then as they freak out because they only do standard I do badly on the fist few steps and then pretend to figure it out as I go and full combo the rest of the song. Their reactions are hilarious. It's happened several times too. I also find it amazing that even though I thought I was totally awesome at this whole thing, a few guys on a ITG machine at the mall completely owned the very hardest songs a few steps away from all Marvelous and I just stand there, jaw dropped, stunned at the sheer obsession that would be required to be able to attempt the feat I had just witnessed. Then I get all pissed off and go play the harder songs on a regular DDR machine to make myself feel better because ITG songs rape me. |

When I started playing I was intimidated by other people around me becuase they were better. But eventually I got over that as I forced my brother to play together (and vice versa) because it was such an awesome game. We also started getting better and made new friends who loved playing DDR as much as we did. Nowadays, I don't mind stepping up to a machine, but the atmosphere definitely is different. It's an old game, it's been around for a while, and people grew tired of watching people play it. Of course, it still draws attention, although not as much these days. With the new machine coming, it might gain back some of the attention it lost, and I know where I'll be spending $100 a week. :P |

The thing is, unless the Zuma nearby gets one (which the chances are about 1 in 1x1099999) I probably will not play it much. I have probably spent less than 10 dollars on DDR in my entire life (that's arcade spending, not my 3 redOctane mats, or any console versions). I almost always play on the Zuma machine because my friend works there and either gives me free tokens or just opens up the little coin box and hits the credit button about 50 times so I can just sit and play for a few hours. |

I played DDR in the arcades, and it's £1 for 3 play (UK) I went with my friends once, and for some reason, I can do heavy at home, but I basic and standard in the arcades.... I think I'm scared of people pointing and laughing at me jump around like an idiot.... But then again, at least i'm enjoying it and having fun with my friends ^__^ |

Yea i understand how you guys feel. Its like the second your about to put the money to play your stuck with this weird feeling. I mean man was it suffocating in there. |

If your having some stage fright problems, than what I suggest is doing a really easy Heavy song first to loosen up a bit. Like Butterfly or Boom Boom Dollar. Then go on to something harder after you feel more confident. At least that's my advice. Hope it helps a bit. |

One thing I like to do, to somewhat get looks from the crowd, is play an easy song first then switch to something crazier next. Meh, but that's kind of showing off, isn't it? :s |

OMG I <3 DDR! I played yesterday. =P At home. I have a stupid PS so there aren't a lot of disks for DDR nowadays...I have the DDR disk 1, 4, and 5. The 1 kinda screwed up. I play full maniac ; o; It's fun. But after I saw these pros playing at the machines, I felt greatly discouraged lol because they were so pro. And I just don't dare play in public, because I think i suck. =P
BLEHHH =P

i play in a mall but i dont live there my grandmother does, but i go somewhat often maybe once a month, i actually didnt suck my first time, but i wasnt great. i always get a big crowd, when i do i usually do saiyuki on standard, bag on standard, and finish with daikenkai on heavy or max unlimited on heavy. its pretty fun to see people in awe, but i dont like heavy cause, its just pressing buttons fast, no rythm :) but i really playing with someone at my level, cause its great doing the same moves at the same time. |
