The name Japan

Ok, who came up with this name for Japan?? I thought Japanese calls their country Nihon? And what about Nippon>>? What name is most correct to use? 日本 itself means Origin of the Sun. |

Nippon and Nihon are both correct, but Nippon is the former term. Nowadays Japan is more commonly known as Nihon. |

The name Nihon or Nippon for Japan means Land of the Rising Sun, since when the Chinese would look at Japan, it would appear as if the sun rose from it. So it has become Nippon or Nihon, the native names for it. I'm not sure which name came first, but Nihon is used most often.
