That's very interesting. But even though they look cool and all......those kind of things creep me out...I think its because of their suction thingys.... |

yes,.. those suction thingys as what you may call it are the ones responsible for feeding them..[some of them..] they wrap their prey[i.e. gastropod or bivalve] with their arms, and the stomach is extruded so that the soft part may liquefy because of the digestive enzymes being secreted and, they suck in the digested mass.. together with their stomach i like describing how they eat ^_^' not all of seastars have those suction thingies.. Yup, they're so cute,.. esp the 1st one,.. and the 2nd one, just like India's bread (naan. i think),. btw, are you sure they don't suck your hand or at least make their body stick on you skin when you touch them? |

Of course they're cool! They can harden, as hard as... just hard for protection. Also, one of their amazing abilities is the ability to automize--to regenerate a lost part, particularly an arm via rapid liquefying of mutable connective tissue (ok... doesn't wanna get technical about this ^^;). Suction thingies? Probably you're talking about tube feet which they utilize for locomotion. Yae could hardly even touch them because the moment they sense yae, they'd automatically harden/coil themselves, which would allow their arms to contract! Poisonous sea stars? Nay, they're not. Although some classes/subclasses under Echinodermata (e.g. Echinoidea) are poisonous, but definitely not sea stars (Asteroidea). These are sea urchins; the black one is poisonous: o.o "To be forgotten, is worse than death." |

I would love to talk about Echinoderms more! I am actually planning to post sea cucumbers (with Jaydel-san's query on evisceration XD!) Well, here's a picture; the sanest (my classmates have diry minds... Ha!) Yae notice the thing that comes out? It's the process of evisceration exemplified by sea cucumbers (Holothurians). It's a form of self-defense for predator attacks; they expell their entire digestive system. ^^; This is not a problem to them though, because when all are lost, they are eventually reformed--PWNING regenerative capabilities of echinoderms! Ah should rename this topic... hehehe. EDIT: Ok, this is renamed to Echinoderms. :D "To be forgotten, is worse than death." |

nice date on the picture yah have there.. where do you go to schooL anyways? coz i'm thinking we almost have the same curriculum ^^' going back to the kingdom animalia makes me dizzy.. i like rhodophyta~!! [kingdom plantae] it has the nori.. [yummy..] EDIT: i finally remembered!! the reason why i wanna talk about sea cucumbers is because my biology teacher said that she has a term for them: utin-utin it's because, when you squeeze them, something comes out.. and it resembles a u-kno-wat... m y . Awesome.... O_O So this is what you were telling me last time... Though my course has no direct relation to Zoology, I still love that subject and always interests me. I miss my high school Biology >_< I've already encountered those The Sea Urchin's spines prick and bury your skin when you touch them. I just realized this when I was pricked by a sea urchin's spine 3-5 times. My Biology teacher should be blamed for that! She didn't tell me anything about the sea urchin's spine T_T Lucky me, it wasn't poisonus. The Sea Urchin that pricked me had a shorter spine and has a deep black color compared to amano-san's picture. 5 posts up The last picture, on the other hand, looks dirty :P urrrrgghhhh! Nakakadiri naman niyan, para kasing lamang loob ng tao/intestine. Buti di kayo tinamaan niya. Pinaglaruan niyo ba pagkatapos? hehehehe ^_^;; Question, how can they protect themselves with that digestive tract? |

I go to UST and I'm taking Biology. We took Zoology just last semester; as yae can see, the pictures are dated 27th Aug, 2005. How evisceration of sea cucumbers form a self-defense againts their predators? As I've said earlier, they thrust out their digestive system (along with their respiratory trees, and gonads)--all their visceral organs. These in turn, will lure potential predators. So instead of getting themselves eaten, they'd provide their insides on the silver platter, then hide away fast. Within a matter of weeks, the lost organs will be regenerated. ^^; About the dirty picture (LOL), even after it was picked up, it did the same. Here are some sea stars again. ^^ This was where we have put all! A pool of echinoderms, with few cnidarians! o.o "To be forgotten, is worse than death." |

o_O Great!!! Nice ones you've got there! I'm happy to know that Bolinao's marine life is blooming. So many echinoderms! and cnidarians too. I hope I can see other species though T_T.... *sobs* Amazing! They can survive for weeks without their internal organs. Great defense mechanism! |
Re: Echinoderms

They really are amazing! ^^ Unfortunately, we weren't able catch sand dollars, sea lilies, feather stars, sea biscuits, brittle stars... oh aye! We did catch a number of these, I'll have to upload those brittle stars! Hold on. Weakness: Sea cucumbers can survive a week without those organs; however, they will never survive a day without coral reefs. u.u "To be forgotten, is worse than death." |
