Import Game software converters
|
Does any one know of any Game Shark type cards or software that can allow a PS2 or Gamecube play imported games from Japan? I saw something on Ebay called Freeloader for the Gamecube, but it was being sold in England, so I don't really know if it will work on a North American Gamecube. I don't want to get something that will damage my game systems. I want to buy the other Naruto games that are currently only available in Japan, plus a friend from Japan is also sending me a copy of the newest Bleach and Gundam SD/Gashapon Wars games. If there is a way to get my N. American system to play those games, then I would save a bundle instead of buying an import version. |

I bought the Freeloader disc for gamecube from ebay, and it doesn't matter what region it's from. A word of warning, look at the currency it is being sold in. I saw the price "14.99" and bought it, only to find out later that it was in Pounds, which are worth about 2 pounds to the dollar, meaning I payed about $30 for it. Still, it's really easy to use. You put the freeloader disc in, turn on the gamecube. Wait until it says "Please insert game disc" and then open the gamecube to switch discs. Close the gamecube and you're set. Being able to play import games on PS2 is a bit trickier. There are several options. It depends on the version of PS2 you have. One option is to install a mod chip, it requires soldering (though I heard more recent PS2s do not require soldering). I did not do this, and don't know much about it. Another option is to install a modded top, basically you buy a "flip-top" that can be opened right above the disc tray. There are different versions for different models of PS2 (most sites that sell them should explain how to check your version, because I don't remember well enough to explain it). You unscrew your original top and screw the new top on (instructions should be included to help with one or two oddities you have to move around inside the PS2). With this, you also get a disc, or maybe two, depending on your model of PS2. Usually they are "Swap Magic" discs, but there are other brands. You put in the swap magic disc in you would a normal game, wait for the "menu" to load, use the open-able top to take out the swap disc, insert the import game, and then hit "load" or "play" or whatever the main menu option is. This is what I did and it works fine. The other option is similar to the flip-top. Basically you get a little "slide card" and you pop off the front on the disc tray. You use swap magic discs the same way, but instead of opening the top, you slide the card under the disc tray (through the opening the front cover leaves) and pull out the disc tray. I heard this has no negative effects on your PS2, but I'm not so sure about that. You can use google to find out more about any of these methods. Some variations on the methods exist for each PS2 model, and I believe there is a different method entirely for slim-line PS2s, but I don't have one and don't relaly know about it. I hope this was helpful. |

Having done both ways before let me say this. Just import the console. Mod chips are flimsy, are difficult to install, often defective, and even when you do get them working they may not work with what you're trying to do (especially when it comes to region conversion). With how much they cost you might as well import a used console.
